Transgenic plants

This is a term for plants which, in addition to the naturally inherited genes, carry one or more foreign genes (transgenes) in their genome, which are passed on to the offspring. These are not introduced into the plant genome through conventional methods of plant breeding, but rather through genetic engineering methods across species boundaries - i.e. in the sense of a horizontal gene transfer - (one speaks here of green genetic engineering). For transgene transmission, mechanisms that already exist in nature are used in a correspondingly modified form, and new methods are developed with the help of which it can be artificially enforced.
